Omega-6 fatty acids are known as essential fatty acids. They get the term "omega-6" due to the first double bond in the carbon backbone of the fatty acid, occurring in the omega minus 6 position; that is, the sixth carbon from the end of the fatty acid. Omega-6 fatty acids interact with omega-3 fatty acids, and is a large part factor in the biological effects of the omega-6 fatty acids. Linoleic acid is the shortest chain omega-6 fatty acid.
