Amino acids are biochemical building blocks. They are the individual components that make up proteins and are essential for human life. They make up about 20% of the human body and are important for proper bodily functioning. There are over fifty different kinds of Amino acids which have been found thus far but only twenty of them are used to make proteins in the human body. All organisms need some proteins, whether they are used in muscles or as simple structures in the cell membrane. Next to water, protein makes up the largest portion of our body weight. Muscles, ligaments, tendons, lymphatic fluids, glands, and the brain are all made mostly of proteins so it is easy to see why amino acids are essential to human life. There are two kinds of amino acids -- essential and non essential amino acids. Non essential amino acids are amino acids that can be produced in our body and therefore it is not essential that we get them from our diet. Essential amino acids cannot be manufactured by the body, thus we need to get these proteins from our diet or supplements. The eight essential amino acids are isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. Histidine is considered semi-essential amino acid because the body does not always require it.
It is very important to have sufficient amounts of essential amino acids in your body for various reasons. An insufficient supply of even one essential amino can cause serious problems to your health. A lack of amino acids leads to a shortness of proteins which are needed for various functions. Amino acids not only build proteins but are needed for basic metabolic functions, growth, digestion, and even processes in the brain. Others help the body use vitamins and minerals for various functions once they are absorbed into your blood stream.
