Maca is an herbaceous biennial plant native to the Bolivian and Peruvian highlands. It is often grown for its fleshly hypocotyls, which is a root vegetable and medicinal herb. The Spanish called it maca-maca, and other indigenous names including maino, ayak chichira and ayak wilku.
This plant is typically grown in altitudes of approximately 1300 to 1500 feet. It grows quite well in cold climates and habitats where few other crops can be grown.
