The Amino Acid Tyrosine

January 29th, 2010

Tyrosine is an essential amino acid important for the proper functioning of the overall metabolism. Tyrosine is a precursor of adrenaline, norepinephrine and dopamine. The latter two neurotransmitters help to regulate both mood and metabolism. These are also fundamental for the proper health of the nervous system.

Because of Tyrosine’s direct effect on mood and metabolism it has been used in formulas to treat depression and fat reduction. Lacking adequate amounts of tyrosine has been shown to create a deficiency of norepinephrine in the brain which can lead to depression. This substance is also a mild antioxidant. For those trying to achieve their weight loss and fitness goals, most importantly, Tyrosine can act an appetite suppressant as well as helping to reduce overall body fat.

Tyrosine also helps in the functioning of the thyroid gland, as well as the pituitary and adrenal glands. These are all involved in mood, metabolism and stress. Symptoms of Tyrosine deficiency can include low body temperature (cold extremities such as hands and feet), low blood pressure, and restless leg syndrome.

Researchers have begun to use supplemental Tyrosine with good effect, especially in stress reduction and in lessening the symptoms of chronic fatigue and narcolepsy. Likewise this miracle supplement has been used for those attempting to quit their bad habits. Supplemental Tyrosine can help with drug addiction as well as those suffering from anxiety, depression, allergies, headaches and even those dealing with Parkinson’s disease.

Another amazing quality of this amino acid has been its ability to help boost low sex drives. Studies have shown that this supplement can help those suffering from sexual problems and dysfunctions related to low libido. It is also an important amino acid for the health of skin and hair and is related to the proper formation of pigmentation.

There are natural ways to get Tyrosine. Tyrosine is found in eggs, almonds, avocados, bananas, dairy products, pumpkin seeds, lima beans, and sesame seeds. If taking supplemental L-Tyrosine than take the supplement at bedtime or right after a high-carbohydrate meal so that Tyrosine does not have to compete with other amino acids.

Finally, those individuals already taking an MAO (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor) drug for depression should limit their consumption of foods containing Tyrosine and should not take it in supplement form as it may lead to a rise in blood pressure. If you are taking prescription medication you should always speak to your health care practitioners about dietary and supplemental changes.
